Blog on Breathing for Singers
I find that breath control can be a mystery to some singers. What is the right way to breathe when singing? I have heard a variety of ideas like, breathe with your diaphragm, support your voice using the diaphragm, hold your breath in your tummy or control your breathing using your abdominal muscles. You maybe a belly breather who experiences abdominal expansion/contraction during breathing , or a chest breather, who experience a rise/fall in the chest and sometimes even the shoulders. Belly breathing is useful for some singing and speaking styles and chest breathing is useful in others. Neither one is right or wrong. Really??? My favorite vocal scientist Jo Estill explains breathing based on proven research that is very liberating and easy to understand.
